Future of the Site

The decommissioning and dismantling of the Greifswald Nuclear Power Plant and the construction and commissioning of the Interim Storage North have influenced the site development of the Energiewerke Nord GmbH for a decade. Since the energy production had been stopped in 1990, the Federal Ministry of Finance provided more than 2.4 Billion ? for the post operation and the decommissioning of the power plant. The biggest NPP decommissioning project worldwide has become an important factor for the stabilization of the industry in East Western Pomerania and the regions nearby.

Since 1991 the site reuse has been prepared while maintaining its infrastructure.

Since 1998 the management of the Energiewerke Nord GmbH has been instructed by the shareholder to sell properties not required anymore for decommissioning and dismantling to suitable investors for the settlement of industry. The Federal and the Regional Government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the regional authority for site development had agreed to keep up the site of Lubmin and to create jobs in this region in the foreseeable future.

Since September 2004 an obligatory B-plan has assured the planning reliability. This becomes even more important because the industrial area at the site, with a size of about 120 ha, is located close to a European bird sanctuary, nearby the Greifswald Bay.

By the existing infrastructure, media and service offers, the "Synergiepark Lubminer Heide" becomes interesting for companies from different economic sectors ? for energy technology, timber industry, environmental and information technology.

With the extension of the industrial harbour, the site possesses besides railway and road also a connection to the seaside. The basin with its length of 890 m and its width of 94 m (and even 175 m at the eastern side as a turning basin) is suitable for Baltic Sea ships up to 2.500 gross register tons and a load bearing capacity up to 3.250 dwt.
