The disposal concept of the EWN GmbH is based on the direct and complete dismantling of the six decommissioned units in Greifswald and Rheinsberg.

Besides the Interim Storage North (ISN/ZLN), the Central Warm Workshop (ZAW) is a further part of this concept.

The former workshop for repairing contaminated components of the Greifswald Nuclear Power Plant was equipped with special conditioning technique as a treatment station for solid radioactive waste and residues. Since 1997 the activities in the ZAW have been adapted to the new task.

The material which remains from dismantling the NPP or material which has been in the ISN for interim storage is being treated to:

  • achieve the free release measurement by cutting and decontamination (removal of radioactive pollution)
  • pack it for an interim or final storage

The ZAW is also used for maintenance of contaminated plant parts.
