The "license for the transport container store of the Interim Storage North (ISN) in Rubenow" from November 5, 1999 in the version of the 4th changing license permits the safekeeping of not more than 80 transport and storage casks of the types CASTOR®440/84, CASTOR®440/84mvK (with modified basket) and the CASTOR®KRB-MOX with less than
for not more than 40 years.
The casks of the type CASTOR® 440/84 contain nuclear fuel in the form of used spent fuel elements, fuel parts of the control rods, enclosed plutonium containing sources, uranium containing ionisation chambers as well as further radioactive material in the form of absorber elements, shielding elements and cluster pipes from pressurized water reactors, type WWER-440 (Greifswald Nuclear Power Plant) and type WWER-70 (Rheinsberg Nuclear Power Plant).
The CASTOR® 440/84 mvK casks contain special fuel elements, i.e. geometric deformed, incomplete, defect fuel elements and fuel elements without defects as well as fuel parts of the control rod, cluster assemblies and experimental assemblies. There is also a special fuel element with "irradiated solid uranium samples", unirradiated UO2- pellets and enclosed plutonium containing sources as well as other radioactive material in the form of an absorber element, a cluster pipe, emergency protection pipes, control rods and emergency shut down rods from the pressurized water reactor, type WWER-70 (Rheinsberg Nuclear Power Plant).
The casks of the type CASTOR® KRB-MOX contain nuclear fuel in the form of geometric deformed, defect fuel parts of the control rods and special fuel elements.
