On March 26, 2007 the planning approval notice for radioactive waste repository Konrad in Salzgitter was affirmed by the highest court. Since then the operating company, the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) is rebuilding the former iron mine to a repository. For further information look at http://www.endlager-konrad.de

With its locations in Greifswald and Rheinsberg and subsidiary companies in Karlsruhe (WAK GmbH) and Jülich (AVR GmbH) the EWN corporation is responsible for 77% of the low and intermediate level radioactive waste from the public sector, which shall be delivered to the repository Konrad.

The German Federation authorized the EWN to take over the planning for reposition and delivery business for the complete waste from the public sector. The coordination of the private waste producers (utilities and industry) will be carried out by the Gesellschaft für Nuklear Service mbH (GNS). This task sharing will also be embedded in the financing agreement to be placed for the repository Konrad, which shall be concluded with the repository operator and each waste producer (Konrad contract).

To live up to the new task, the EWN started the “EWN Karlsruhe Office” at the location Karlsruhe. The Office (called EWN-GE) is directly subordinated to the management board. The main task is the repository management for the EWN corporation and the public sector. The Karlsruhe location was chosen because 2/3 of the waste quantity from the public sector is situated in this area.
